Tracking The WhiteTail Deer

One day last season my uncle and I were scouting just upondark and we came within view ofa nice whitetail buck that had beggunrutting. The buck had gone topawing up the turfand that was a five-starsign as the season had just started. The deer season had recentlylaunched, so this was a great signto find bucks rutting at the onset of deer season.

After glaringthe situation over, I arose to the view that the buck shouldhold up out on a very smallpeninsula that jutted out into the streamthat we saw him by.  After jumping the buck, he took of right to his hiding place.

Although I rarely hunt anymorelargely because of my bad health, I came to an agreementto go out on a hunt with my uncle last fall to try our skillsat this buck. I wasn’t going to hunt, but simply helpwith advancingand calling to divertthe buck from where he was to what was sure to be his end… or so me and himimagined.

Whitetail bucks time and againhave a few secrets that they need to discloseto you at the moment of decision.This whitetail was unaware that he had just revealed his hiding spot to us.

The planwas perfect or so we thought.  Here’s the explanation! My uncle was to get into position where he could scout out the Whitetail bucks cut loose route, which he did.

I was to progressmy way down alongthe stream and easily move that white tail buck out of his hiding space, and into the open. So I began mymigrationalong the stream,to the right and a bit ahead of me. To my other side was a significant clearcut area.

In front of me was the only wooded area around. I concludedthe buck was in front of me, because I had always jumped him in the time ofmy scouting excursions.  .

As I nonchalantlymade my way down to the bucks peninsula and calling every so consistently, everything was falling into place. Or so I surmised.  Just as I enteredhis hiding spot, I caught flash of him bounding off in the direction that he was presumedto go. But he didn’t seem to be in to big of a hurry.

So I slowly made off into the direction that he was bound for. Up front of me was a lowbrook that enteredthe stream with a beaver dam. This was the ambush point… or so we assumed.  What occurred was, as the buck was about to navigatethe small brook, I came out of the wooded area and it was right close to the last of authorized shooting period and as I came out into the open, I saw the flag of a deers tail but couldn’t make out if it was a buck or a doe.

It was a cloudy drizzly day and so I begunto call excessivelyand often to get my uncles attention.  I didn’t know that I was distracting his attention from the buck, which permitted the buck to depart unharmed.

After meeting up with my uncle he told me that we dam near had him. The buck had alot of points with tall tines he said. Oh well we will try him again in the future.

It just goes to show that Ya, just never know

Horse bits are fundamental to the rider controlling his or her horse .  There are countles types of horse bit availableso needless to say it can be confusing identifying what you actually need for your horse .

Horse bit types are broken down into different categories based on the features they have and how they control the horse. Within such categories are sub-categories where the action of the bit is adapted or added to by extra attributes such as the material the bit is made from .

At the top level of our horse bits categories typically we see Snaffles and Curb bits.  The term Snaffle covers quite a broad category of horse bits however they all exhibit a single common principle in that they allow control of the horse via direct force from the rider by the pulling of one or both reigns.

Physically all Snaffle bits are formed from a straight bar or mouthpiece with rings connected with different degrees of freedom to move at each end. The bit sits in the horse’s mouthresting on the gums not the teeth, in the space behind the front incisors and the molars behind sometimes refered to as the “bars”.

These two main features of the Snaffle namely the mouthpiece and rings bring specific function to the bit .  The mouthpiece can be in one solid piece or it may be “broken” or jointed in the middle . Solid mouthpieces often come made in moulded rubber or vulcanite which is kinder to the horse and often used for young horses whilst they are being trained to respond to the bit . The jointed bit is created so that the mouthpiece breaks in the middle when the rider pulls the reins inducing a “nutcracker” effect on the horses tongue which provides the control.  The single break mouthpiece forms a “V” shape in the mouth whereas the double break forms a “U” shape.  . This gives the horse’s tongue more room and can also be kinder on the roof of the mouth.  

The severity of the action of the mouthpiece can be modified by using twisted pieces and different metals such as copper. The effect on the horse can be drastic and as a responsible owner think first of your horse’s welfare and if in doubt ask for advice and don’t rush into a decision that you may regret . 

Remember there is a balance between being too soft on the horse and not firm enough. Going for the soft option can lead to bad habbits that are then more difficult to address later on and being too harsh can cause the horse pain and discomfort and is just bad in every way.

The rings positioned at each end of the mouthpiece of the Snaffle connect to the reins . Whilst simple in concept they still come in different forms with each type giving subtle effects which together with the mouthpiece provide varying types of control to your horse.  To introduce you this variety we will introduce some of the more common ring features seen on snaffle type horse bits.

Loose Ring Snaffles are where the rings connected to the mouthpiece are free to rotate and move back and forth causing the horse to chew and hopefully relax and not pull against you .  One downside to loose rings is that they can pinch the horse’s mouth and get pulled through the mouth.  These problems can be addressed by another type of Snaffle. Fixed Ring Snaffles which are not free to rotate but can move back and forth.  The Eggbutt and the D-ring Snaffle are popular examples.  They have “D” shaped rings rather than “O” shaped and the straight part of the “D” functions to help prevent the bit being pulled through the mouth, ie. if forms a brace against the side of the mouth in both directions.  The Eggbutt has a slightly softer edge to it’s “D” and is therefore kinder to the horse’s mouth.

The fixed ring effects can be further enforced by using a Full Cheek Snaffle Bit where there is a vertical piece of metal on each end of the mouthpiece as well as the ring. This piece provides a much longer vertical surface compared to the D bit and often to help it stay in the vertical position “keepers” are used to hold it in place. Not only do full cheeks prevent pull through of bit they can provide a mild leverage effect and also encourage the horse to move in the direction required.

This is just a brief introduction to the features of Snaffle Bits.  As you can see by careful understanding of your horse’s behaviour and how to control him you may find a Snaffle bit to suit your needs.

There is no doubt about it. T wo campers can sleep much warmer when they are in a double sleeping bag together, than if they sleep apart in their own sleeping bags.

All sleeping bags are built to isolate you from the cold air outside you, and trap your natural body heat to make sure you are warm during the night. The air is caught in the insulation in your sleeping bag, and is heated up by your natural body heat. This is what makes you warm and cosy in your sleeping bag . That is where you sleep warm from your own body heat .

With two folks sleeping together inside a double sleeping bag (or two single bags joined together) they automatically warm each other as well as the double sleeping bag; which means there is twice as much body heat to go around.

That way you can sleep really warm and cozy, even on a cold night. Just snuggle together a little closer and grab all that body warmth!

So because of this closeness, I would only recommend placing two people together in a double sleeping bag if they are already a couple, and are very much in love. That kind of closeness encourages other activities, as you well know already .

There is one other situation where you may need to put two (or even three) people together in a 2-person sleeping bag, or place them inside two sleeping bags joined together. That situation is an emergency that happens occasionally when climbers have been out in wet and cold and/or windy weather, and if somebody in your party comes down with  exposure (hypothermia). If this ever happens to somebody while you are hiking in the wilds or out mountain climbing, you must stop walking right away and pitch a tent to keep out the wind and the rain or snow .

Undress the casualty and put him or her, unclothed , into a sleeping bag together with one or two other warm bodies . This is done to give some life-saving warmth across to the weakened person. (They will almost certainly appear confused, repeatedly tripping over , wanting to fall asleep , and so on .) That person’s life is in danger because hypothermia is a killer! Keep them safe and warm inside the tent and sleeping bag, and send others to bring help immediately. If you have a personal distress beacon, use it now .

All kinds of outdoor sleeping bags are made in different qualities which vary from cheap , to top-quality camping equipment that will probably be in serviceable condition long after you have passed on . Be prepared to pay more to get  a good quality sleeping bag, and you are unlikely to be let down . I suggest you take a good look at a few double sleeping bags in several camping stores and talk to the sales clerk or shop assistant and explain your requirements . Feel the loft of the insulation , look at the sewing quality and check that the zipper slides easily. Make a choice that you can live with.
